Globus Toolkit
Globus Toolkit (also called GT4 for Globus Toolkit version 4) is a framework of a grid middleware. It consists of a set of tools serving as a basis for creating grids and grid applications. Globus Toolkit implements a series of standards, mainly the Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA).
GT4 is composed of modules enabling a more or less independent use of particular functions. Since version 4 of the Globus Toolkit, many (but not all) functions have been realized as web services conform to the Web-Service Resource Framework (WSRF) standard. The most important elements of the Globus Toolkit are:
- GRAM (Grid Resource Allocation Management): GRAM enables the localization, sending, monitoring and cancellation of the jobs. Thus, GRAM provides basic functions to control jobs on remote resources. GRAM is addressed via a batch system and does not contain a scheduler.
- MyProxy enables saving and requesting certificates. This component issues certificates by order of a user. From the user’s point of view, this enables the realization of a single-sign-on.
- Grid-FTP is a variety of FTP optimized for networks with high bandwidth-delay-products.
- RFT (Reliable File Transfer) implements a reliable file transfer based on Grid-FTP. RFT makes it possible to continue interrupted file transfers.
