Zusammenfassung:

This month, the most powerful particle accelerator ever built, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), will start operating at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC will smash together proton beams with an energy of 7TeV, reproducing conditions of the Universe close to the Big Bang. The products of the proton collisions will be recorded using four huge high-technology detectors which are located at different points round the LHC ring. The quantity of physics data that the LHC will produce are vast: of order 15PB per year will need to be recorded. The data needs to be analysed by thousands of physicists around the world who are searching for the Higgs boson, CP violation and signatures of new physics. This presents new data storage challenges and requires the use of new Grid technologies to manage the distribution across all corners of the Grid, the storage the vast quantities of data on heterogeneous storage media, and enable efficient access to it such that physics results can be extracted. If Grid storage stops working the science will not be done. This talk aims to describe the central role that data storage plays in the operation of the LHC and other non-particle physics projects. I will motivate the challenges and emphasise the how these projects have constructed Grids which provide both a distributed computing infrastructure and distributed data storage.
